Cancer has recently overtaken heart disease as the leading cause of death in the developed world. With 1 in 3 Canadians getting cancer, there are few of us who have not already been touched by this devastating disease, whether it is ourselves, our family or friends.

Most people feel helpless and hopeless in the face of this diagnosis, and yet the National Cancer Institute in the US suggests that 65% of all cancer can be prevented through diet and lifestyle choices. This means getting more exercise, quitting smoking, getting enough sleep, and especially, following a healthy, cancer-combating diet.

Let Food Be Your Medicine!
The use of protein for proper immune function, polyunsaturated fats for reducing cellular inflammation, plus ample fresh fruits and vegetables for anti-oxidants and other phyto-nutrients can prevent body conditions that promote cancer, inhibit the development of tumours, and help your body to heal from the effects of cancer treatments like radiation and chemotherapy.

The study of phyto-chemicals is one of the fastest growing areas of scientific research. Plant compounds beyond vitamins and minerals have been found to exert powerful and positive effects on human health. For example, turmeric has been the subject of hundreds of studies, mostly to examine the role of one of its major constituents, curcumin, as an anti-cancer agent. The jury is in: turmeric plays a key role as a crusader against degenerative disease

On Friday Sept. 20th (6pm 9pm) and Saturday Sept 21st (9:30am-5pm) Medical Herbalist Chanchal Cabrera and Professional Chef Joseph Forest join forces to host The Cancer Fighting Kitchen at Innisfree Farm.
