The Syrian Bride (subtitled)

(2004/Israel, Germany, France/97 min/English, and Arabic, Hebrew, and Russian w/ Eng subs Eran Riklis) – Beautiful Mona is engaged to be married to Tallel, a popular television comedian. It’s the eve of her wedding, and this should be the happiest day of Mona’s life. But Mona lives in Majdal Shams, the largest Druze village in Golan Heights, and Tallel lives and works in Damascus, Syria.

Rabbit Proof Fence

(2002/Australia/94 min/Aboriginal and English) – Based on the book Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence by aboriginal author Doris Pilkington Garimara, this film tells the tale of Australia’s “Stolen Generation”. It recounts the real life story of the author’s own mother and two other mixed-race Aboriginal girls, who ran away from the Moore River Native Settlement in order to return to their Aboriginal families.

This results in enormous profits, and greater control of the global food supply by fewer and fewer companies.

(2009/Mexico and U.S.A/96 min/Spanish (w/ Eng subtitles)) – Seeking the promise of America, a beautiful young Honduran woman joins her father and uncle on an odyssey to cross the gauntlet of the Latin American countryside en route to the United States. While stowing away on a train, she crosses paths with a teenaged Mexican gang member who is manoeuvring to outrun his violent past and elude his unforgiving former associates.

(2002/U.S.A/104 min/English) – Ten years in the making, this documentary was filmed during nine journeys throughout Tibet, India and Nepal. It brings audiences to the long-forbidden “rooftop of the world” with an unprecedented richness of imagery: from rarely-seen rituals in remote monasteries, to horse races with Khamba warriors; from brothels and slums in the holy city of Lhasa, to magnificent Himalayan peaks still traveled by nomadic yak caravans.

After several unfruitful attempts to find a job, Maggie finds herself roaming the streets of London Soho. Her eye is caught by a small poster in the window of a “shop” called “Sexy World” which reads: “Hostess wanted.” Too desperate, dazed, and naďve to realize what she’s doing, she takes the job. Soon, she transforms herself into the much sought after and highly paid “Irina Palm.”
