The Nanaimo Art Gallery, 900 Fifth Street location presents VIU student exhibition Structural Connections from Nov. 20 – Dec. 19th. This exhibit consists of work created by the students of Arts 384, a course focussed on finding bridges between Two dimensional and Three dimensional Art mediums and processes. Students are encouraged to experiment with combinations of traditional mediums such as painting, drawing , sculpture, and textiles.
In the context of this show, students were asked to reflect on the curatorial theme of Structural Connections, and ultimately create small-scale installation based work that addresses their speculation of the meaning of the shows’ title and theme.
Some students have chosen to view the theme as it relates to political and politicized structures, such as global power systems and hierarchies. Others have chosen to look for these structural connections between the processes and materials commonly used in Art-making.
Regardless of their personal interpretation of the shows’ curatorial theme, students have been challenged to address the basic structural and architectural conventions of the white-cube gallery space and its inherent limitations and possibilities.
Opening Reception is Friday, November 20th from 5:00-7:00pm, for more information please call 250-740-6350.
