The presentations and tours will take place throughout the day. Local photographer Cim MacDonald will host a workshop on taking nature photos and follow up with a birding tour. Visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras on the tours. Dave Polster, a plant ecologist, will host an invasive plant workshop and marsh tour while Lynn Woodgate, native plant expert, will provide forest tours and demonstrations. Pacific Northwest Raptors will lead a presentation about local raptors and host a meet and greet with some of their own raptors. Children of all ages will love getting up close to marsh monsters in the portable pond demonstration and checking out salmon fry and crayfish. Children can make bird feeders and everyone will enjoy riding the train over the Somenos Lake trestle. This event will be a great time-rain or shine. It doesn’t matter if you get wet when you are on a wetland!
Marsh Fest provides a unique opportunity for the community to learn more about the wildlife and plants that live in the Somenos Lake wetlands. Many people are surprised to find out that the BC Forest Discovery Centre’s property includes 40 acres of wetlands. Somenos Marsh is a globally significant bird area with unmatched opportunities for bird watching.
