CONTRA DANCE at the MERVILLE HALL (long version)
Once again it is Contra Dance time down at the Merville Hall, Saturday, January 20th. If you were at the last Contra dance in November, you'll know what a great time was had by all. The Funtime Fiddlers' band will be cranking out the endless tunes and caller June Cannon will be bossing everyone around the hall as she gets us all swinging in time to the bouncy music.
If you have never been to a Contra event before, now is your chance. No experience is necessary as the caller teaches each dance before it is actually done to the music. The caller then leads the dance while the band plays, so dancers are able to perform each movement to the music. Most people catch on quickly and soon the hall is full of prancing participants. And you don't have to come with a partner as dancers can pair up right there on the hardwood floor.
After a couple of contra dances, the band will slow the music tempo and will play some waltzes, foxtrots, swing tunes and polkas so that other styles of dancing can be enjoyed. Then it is time for another set of contras and the evening rushes on.
The Merville hall is looking fabulous these days. New paint, a remodelled stage and sound system are adding a classy touch and the bar and canteen are available to slake a thirst and feed a peckish tummy.
So bring your friends, your family or just yourself, to the Merville Hall to kick off the new year.
