Careers in the Trades

Despite the recent downturn in the economy there is still a need for young workers to meet an expected shortfall of skilled trades people over the next ten years. With 44,000 people a year moving to BC, infrastructure and repair projects are still being planned. As reported in Business in Vancouver, creative solutions are being found to cope with the continued demand for housing. Some cities, such as Vancouver and Surrey, have allowed the development of small, affordable “lane houses” in answer to the housing slowdown. The construction of multi-family rental units over condos is also becoming more attractive to developers in response to a drop in construction costs. Opportunities for skilled workers will continue in most sectors of the trades.
Whether you are trying to select a career path, looking for a career change, or wanting to explore training programs, these three days will be of great interest. Participants will receive a general introduction to the industry, and information on apprenticeship programs and educational opportunities. Participants will meet and interact with a variety of local trades professionals, find out about the benefits of working in trades, learn about training options and more.
Some scheduled speakers and tours include Den Mar Electric, Steve Marshall Ford mechanic and detailing, Work Safe BC, and VIU trades departments. More speakers to be announced, including professionals in landscaping and organic garden management.
