Blackstones and Bathtubs: A Musical Revue of the Town You Never Knew

This Canada 150 production of Blackstone and Bathtubs is inviting and actively encouraging submissions from performers from all ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.

Casting: We will be casting four strong actor/singers with a strong movement background/training. All characters will be awakened through multiple other roles as the story weaves through ‘The Dream of Nanaimo’ and they land in different moments in time and space. · Wilson - Baritone: A young Canadian scholar who is on this cruise preparing for his studies, a master’s art installation on cruise ship culture. · Ivanka - Soprano: A young (teen to early 20s) American girl/woman whose father has sent her on this cruise to further her ’education’ on Canadian culture. · Harriet - Alto: In her 40-60s. Harriet and her husband Henry are on their first trip to the west coast of Canada. They are not avid travellers. · Henry - Tenor: In his 40-60s. On his first trip to the west coast of Canada with his wife Harriet whom he loves beyond measure. Henry also loves food. · Voice of Thunderbird/various: (pre-recorded) This voice is a guide, at moments as the deep, ancient voice of the land and at others as a ferry announcement. The voice of the transformer, the trickster, the sub conscious. · Drummer: There will be one Indigenous drummer who will be integral to the theme music that connects our dream sequences. This drumming and the other instrumentation will together weave a connective tissue, like a conversation between the voice of Nanaimo’s confederate history and the voice of its Indigenous history.

If you are offered an audition you may be asked to: 1. Perform 2 short excerpts from contrasting songs (musical theatre, pop, folk, classical). 1 upbeat and 1 ballad (16 bars) 2. Perform a monologue of own choice (consider role descriptions when choosing a monologue) 3. Performers will be emailed a short piece of script to learn for the audition 4. Performers may be asked to learn/perform 1 part of a 4 part piece 5. Performers may be asked to do some basic movement

*A pianist will be provided. Please bring sheet music. Contract details: Paid Contract 3-4 weeks in Nanaimo, BC CAEA D.O.T contracts available Rehearsals June 12 – 30, 2017 Performances July 1 - 9 (9 shows) – show length 1 hour
