Come early for the best selection of artworks!

Comox Valley Art Gallery celebrates its 35 years in the Comox Valley with the CVAG 35th Anniversary Open Show and art sale, opening on Friday October 23 at 7pm-9pm. All are welcome to attend, see the artworks on display, meet the artists and have a chance to purchase art by over 70 artists. With so many local artists in the show, it promises to be a social evening. The exhibit will run at the gallery for 2 weeks, with the closing day being Saturday Nov. 7th.

This exhibition was an open call to artists working in all media. In the exhibit you will see fine oil, acrylic and watercolour painting, drawings, print making, ceramics, sculpture, photography, woodcraft, glass and more. For anyone looking to be inspired, come by and have a look, see what artists are up to. If you are in the market to invest in some art to adorn your home, the art is priced to meet a wide range of budgets. Revenues from the sale of each artwork are shared with the artists, with a portion being a fundraiser for the gallery. With provincial funds being reduced to many aspects of art and culture, purchasing a work from the gallery during this exhibit will assist in its financial support, while one also takes home a work of art.

Some well known artists have submitted art work to this show and sale: Marilyn Timms, Karin Martin Sampson, Masoud Zadeh, Victoria Scott, Tony Martin, Donna Mattila, Margaret Burns, Betty Carlson, Rhonda Burden, Martin Kaspers, Heimke Webb, Marilyn Peeters and Bev Byerley are just to name a few. For the best selection, attend opening night or see the exhibition early on.

The COMOX VALLEY ART GALLERY was established by a group of artists as the Central Island Arts Alliance, under the umbrella of the Comox Valley Community Arts Council . CIAA achieved British Columbia society status and federal charitable organization status in 1974. From its inception, it has been recognized by the Cultural Services Branch of the Province of BC with grant funding to support operations. One of the first art centres located outside Vancouver and Victoria, the CIAA held visual art exhibitions, operated a co-operative shop featuring local crafts, and organized and promoted performance arts and festivals. The Renaissance Faire, an annual arts and entertainment fair, was the major fundraising activity supporting the operations of the CIAA.

In 1997, the Board of Directors moved to change the name to COMOX VALLEY ART GALLERY to more properly reflect the core business - that is visual art exhibition programming. The Gallery Shop continues to market handmade works by local and regional artisans. May 2005 saw the realization of a long term plan by the Board of Directors for COMOX VALLEY ART GALLERY - relocation to a new venue in a municipally owned building - the former Courtenay Fire Hall. The Gallery occupies the main floor and lower level of the new Comox Valley Centre for the Arts. This building provides four exhibition galleries and an environmentally secure archive room. With its award winning design and higher profile location, CVAG attracts attention to downtown Courtenay and the Comox Valley.
