Women and Alcohol: Breaking the Silence
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
It’s a troubling trend: women are catching up with men in terms of alcohol consumption, despite strong evidence that the adverse health effects of alcohol are much more dangerous to women. Ann Dowsett Johnston (author of the bestseller Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol) explores the role of marketing, campus culture, and socio-economic pressures influencing the way in which women drink. Her aim: to jumpstart a national dialogue on a public health challenge. A panel discussion on women, alcohol and BC’s changing alcohol policy will follow.
Panelists include: Dr. Tim Stockwell (Moderator, CARBC); Dr. Bernie Pauly (UVic Department of Nursing, CARBC); and Dr. Gerald Thomas (Director of Alcohol Harm Reduction, BC Ministry of Health).
Ann Dowsett Johnston is an award-winning journalist and author of the bestselling Drink, named one of the best books of the year by the Washington Post. Part memoir, part journalistic exploration, Drink has won acclaim around the world. Winner of the Atkinson Fellowship on Public Policy, Dowsett Johnston is also the founder of the National Roundtable on Girls, Women and Alcohol and a founding director of Faces and Voices of Recovery Canada. She is currently CEO of Pine River Foundation.
Presented by the Centre for Addictions Research of BC.
