From concept to final product, the artistry behind Canadian currency and stamps is on exhibit at the Nanaimo Museum. Travelling from Ottawa, Voices from the Engraver is from the Bank of Canada Museum in partnership with the Canadian Museum of History.
The exhibit runs from September 12 to November 21.
Voices from the Engraver features artifacts such as water colours, photos and drawings along with engraver’s tools and printing plates used in the production of bank notes and stamps. “This exhibit is an opportunity to see how the art we see every day in money and stamps is created,” says Aimee Greenaway, Interpretation Curator at the Nanaimo Museum. “We are pleased to bring this travelling exhibit to our community during its cross Canada tour.” Voices from the Engraver also takes a peak behind the scenes and shows bank note and stamp designs that were not retained.
Some unusual artifacts are featured in the exhibit. A Birds of Canada $1000 litho proof from 1988, artwork for the back of a 1954 $2 bill and a Scenes of Canada proposed back of a $2 bill from 1967. “There is something for everyone in Voices from the Engraver,” says Greenaway. “Stamp and currency collectors, artists and anyone who has paused for a moment to look at the images on money and stamps will enjoy this exhibit.”
There is a workshop, Engraving Fit for a Queen, for homeschooling families with children ages 10-14 years. Students will learn about the art and technical processes behind stamps and currency. The workshop is on Wednesday, November 9 from 1:30-2:30. Pre-registration is required and the cost is $5 per student which includes museum admission for caregivers and younger siblings. Caregivers must be on-site at all times during the workshop.
Voices from the Engraver opens September 12 and closes November 21. The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10am-5pm.
The Nanaimo Museum is located in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, beside Serious Coffee.
