7:30 PM

It’s time to party! Bring your dancing shoes, some savoury or sweet finger food to share, and a whole lot of seasonal cheer (non-alcoholic, please!) to the Victoria Folk Music Society’s annual year-end festivities. Rig-a-Jig will provide the music, experienced callers will teach and lead the dancing, and troupes of Morris dancers will offer up their outlandishly costumed theatrical entertainment.

Known for playing upbeat Celtic music, Rig-a-Jig is a fixture of Victoria’s contra dance scene. They can also be heard each month on the third Friday at the Oaks Restaurant and Grill in Oak Bay.

After sixteen years, the band is made up of Molly Raher-Newman on percussion, mandolin, and lap dulcimer; Ian Johnston on guitar and ukulele; Dick Pollard on fiddle; and Karen Gillmore on flute, whistle, and banjo. Oh, and they all sing, too!

Our feature act will be preceded by what is arguably Victoria’s best weekly acoustic Open Stage session where musicians from fledglings to professionals can perform a 10 minute set for one of the most welcoming, attentive and participative audiences in town. Aspiring Open Stage performers can sign-up with the VFMS Host between 7:00 and 7:30pm to do a set but should get there early to improve their chances of getting on the evening’s line-up.
