The Witness Blanket, a nationally recognized and thought-provoking art installation about the impacts of Canada’s Residential School Era, will be displayed at Vancouver Island University’s The View Gallery from October 6 – November 30.
Created by First Nations artist and master carver Carey Newman, The Witness Blanket is a wood-based art installation made up of hundreds of items reclaimed from residential schools, churches, government buildings, and traditional and cultural structures across Canada.
To honor this important work, an official opening is taking place Thursday October 6. Everyone is welcome to attend. The opening and reception will take place at 6:30 pm in the Malaspina Theatre lobby where Carey Newman and others will be speaking about this important work.
The Witness Blanket can be viewed from 5 - 9 pm that day before and after the speeches and reception. To view the installation, The View Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm.
