Here are three innovative and dazzling musicians, each well known across Canada and internationally who’ve made their home base Gabriola to the delight and benefit of us all. “Lloyd—and I know Victor agrees with me—is the Godfather of New Orleans Jazz here in Canada.” states John Capon.
Lloyd (clarinet, soprano sax, vocals) exudes the relaxed hospitality of the Prairies as he tells me he can remember the lyrics of every song he’s ever sung. He’s a storyteller extraordinaire, continuing the oral tradition. His career spans decades, including many clubs plus CBC radio and TV gigs.
John Capon, (tuba, trombone, vocals) creator of The Gabriola Ensemble, is brilliantly comfortable with classical or jazz music. An educator, songwriter, and arranger, he has mentored many a young player.
Victor Anthony, (guitar, harmonica, vocals) seasoned in Tennessee, is steeped in the tradition of blues and jazz, and he is, like his fellow Stompers, amazingly versatile. When I asked him to give me a quote about this group, he smiled and said, “The fun factor is ramped up.”
Their show last February 2016 at the Phoenix Theatre was full to bursting. And I am happy to agree with Victor about the fun factor! I hope to see you all there.
