Strawberry Tea

A traditional "Strawberry Tea" served at your table with a generous portion of eye-appealing, delicious Strawberry Shortcake. All this takes place in an ambience of live piano music. The venue is the Samuel Maclre-designed Cridge Hall which is set between Cridge Park and the historic Church of Our Lord. Tours of the church itself will be available, complete with music played on the vintage Boston-built 1820 Appleton pipe organ - a "tracker" organ - which was brought to Victoria by sailing ship, via Cape Horn, in the middle 1800s. The building itself, opened in 1876, is "Carpenter Gothic" and was the family church of - among other early Victorian families - Sir James Douglas, Senator William John MacDonald, the Helmcken family and the Emily Carr family. Construction took place on the shores of James Bay - the bay that was later filled in to accommodate the building of the Empress Hotel. The first Rector was Bishop Edward Cridge who, with his wife, Mary, were responsible for bringing into being the Royal Jubilee Hospital, the Cridge Centre for the Family (originally the Protestant Orphan's Home) and were active in the establishment of the YMCA and Central High School.
Funds raised from the Strawberry Tea are for supporting local charitable organizations and for the maintenance of this historic, heritage building.
