Sound Sculputing is the project of April Laurie.  This workshop will include things like rythm in body percussion, movement, vocal technique, overtone singing, beatbox basics, and ensemble singing. She stives to make this a fun, and safe experience regardless of musical skill and experience. We will experience what it is like to respond to sound, and to add our own ideas. Simple is better, because musical collaboration requires patience, listening, and generosity. Improvisation is a skill that can benefit all of our living, not just music making.

April grew up discovering what kinds of sounds she could make with her voice. She sang in churches, choirs, and Jazz bands. She began studying and playing West African, and Latin drums in 1997, and has taught since 1998. A few years later She sang at Capilano College in the Vocal Jazz program. Since 2012 she sings and drums in a Kirtan band, makes music for yoga classes, and improvises music for regular dance events at Omtown yoga studio in downtown Nanaimo. For the past three years, she has been exploring the limitlessness of musical improvisation, and has been studying with Rhiannon of rhiannonmusic.com, and David Hatfield in Vancouver. She has been playing african and latin drums since 1997, and is influenced by folk, african, indian, reggae, jazz, latin, and electronic music.
