Registration for new French Immersion that starts in Grade 6

Every child should have the opportunity to master a second language. In Nanaimo, students
must survive a lottery to get a spot in Kindergarten or Grade 1 French Immersion. Now, a
new option is added to start French Immersion in Grade 6. No French experience required.
Enriching bilingual experience within a supportive environment with lots of humour. All
students are welcome.

In British Columbia, there are 2 types of French Immersion:
- Early French Immersion begins in either Kindergarten or Grade 1
- Late French Immersion begins in Grade 6 and will be offered in September 2014

In the 2011 �French Immersion Review � of the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District's French
Immersion program delivery recommended to offer Late French Immersion as an option to
students and families. Its a popular option in Parksville and Victoria, among other places.

French Immersion follows the same curriculum as the regular program except all learning and
teaching is in French. It is fully funded and free to join.

In year one of Late French Immersion (Grade 6), students do all their learning completely in
French. Their French develops so quickly that they integrate into Early French Immersion
classes by Grade 8.

Late French Immersion is suitable for virtually any student regardless of background or
achievement level.

French is good for your mind. Studies show that a multilingual brain is nimbler, quicker, better
able to deal with ambiguities, resolve conflicts, and that bilingual students averaged higher
scores in cognitive performance on tests and had greater attention focus, distraction
resistance, decision-making, judgment and responsiveness to feedback.
