Marilyn Skinner, co-founder with her husband Gary Skinner, of WATOTO CHILD CARE MINISTRIES in Kampala, Uganda (you've probably seen or heard tell of one of their travelling CHILDREN'S CHOIRS perform over the years) is coming to NANAIMO to share her heart for the most marginalized and wounded people in Africa: WOMEN.
LIVING HOPE, initiated in early 2008, is currently committed to transforming the lives of 1,200 women in Kampala and 900 women in Gulu. Left abandoned or widowed, the target group is HIV+ single women, returnees from abduction, and teenage mothers.
The goal is to RESTORE DIGNITY to these women in the following ways:
1. By improving their quality of life, assisting them with basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter and medical care
2. Providing comprehensive HIV/AIDS care including counselling and psychosocial support
3. Spiritual and moral discipleship
4. Empowering and equipping them with vocational skills
5. Setting them up with self sustainable income generating projects using micro-finance loans
Some of these women have been brutally tortured both mentally and physically. Lips, ears, noses and even genital parts severed from their bodies. The wounds and scars are a constant reminder of their past and theyre also part of the reason for the harsh rejection they receive from their community and family.
Marilyn will be sharing the powerful and inspiring stories of the courageous Ugandan women who OVERCAME incredible obstacles to rise up as LEADERS in their communities. She will be reading an excerpt from her book, RETURN TO DIGNITY , which features the stories of 8 incredible women who experienced unbelievable atrocities, but who ultimately found their voice in the love of Jesus and the support of Living Hope.
***Marilyn's heart is that these women's stories of incredible triumph and courage in the face of adversity - about how the love of Jesus changed their lives, - will have an eternal impact in the lives of the women of OUR community.***
There is no charge for this event, although there will be hand-crafted items for sale which the women of Living Hope ministries have skillfully made as a means to help support themselves and the ministry of Living Hope.
Light Refreshments will be served. A question and answer time with Marilyn will follow the presentation.
