Let�s plant 100 new fruit trees at Plant-a-Fruit-Tree-Day!

Fernwood NRG and the Compost Education Centre are hosting Plant-a-Fruit-Tree-Day in celebration of National Tree Day and the planting of the Fernwood Community Orchard. If you are interested in increasing the food production at your home, this is the perfect event for you.

Local nurseries will be present with an assortment of fruit and nut trees for you to purchase. Wild Edge Garden Farm will have walnut, apple, pear, plum, mulberry, and fig trees to name a few. Salt Spring Apple Co., who specializes in heritage apple varieties, will be there to answer any questions you have and find the perfect tree for you. Other vendors include Marigold Nursery, Cannor Nursery, and GardenWorks.

Every hour there will be drop-in mini workshops on topics related to fruit trees:

- 11:00am, catch Fruit Tree Basics with Arborist Ryan Senechal of Senechal Specimen Tree & Orchard Care
- 1:00pm, Senechal will be teaching Fruit Tree Culture, an overview of pest and disease management, soil management, trellis/cordon/espalier, wire training, propping and companion planting
- 2:00pm, drop-in to Turning Your Lawn Into a Superfood Orchard by permaculture expert Tayler Krawczyk of Hatchet & Seed Contracting


Fernwood is lucky to be one of two neighbourhoods chosen to work with the City of Victoria on their Community Orchard Pilot Program. These orchards will demonstrate how we can grow healthy, local food in visible public places & maintain multiple uses. Through consultation with neighbours, Fernwood NRG has created a design with 25 fruit trees including apples, pears, plums, and figs. The fruit produced will be shared with the community; everyone is invited to harvest.

Interested in having a hand in the planting of these trees? The planting will be happening on Saturday, September 28th between 10:00am and 4:00pm at the Fernwood Community Centre. Join in; bring a shovel and gloves if you have them. These trees will bare fruits for decades to come.

Our goal is to have 100 NEW fruit and nut trees planted on September 28th! Come down, buy a fruit tree of your own, drop-in to a mini workshop, help plant the Community Orchard, and catch Sole Food Farms� inspiring talk. Be a part of this historic moment!
