Percussion Workshops - Conga, Bongo & Cajon

Happening at the Little Red Church Healing Arts Center (next to the Little Red Church hall), these percussion workshops will be led by Oscar Robles Diaz from Mexico. Conga & Bongo: 12:15pm - 2:15pm Cajón (box drum): 2:45pm - 4:45pm Cost: $20 each workshop, or $35 for both.

Cajón (aka: the groove box): This workshop will touch upon some traditional cajón rhythms and then move on to modern applications for this incredibly versatile instrument, from flamenco to folk, jazz, hip hop, funk, samba & bossa nova. All ages/ability leves welcome. *Bring your cajón. Conga and Bongo: This workshop will focus on conga and bongo rhythms that are the basic foundations of many popular styles from Latin America. Proper hand and body positioning will be shown, as well as several techniques aimed at internalizing syncopation in the body, gaining a deep sense of groove and finding the freedom to express oneself through improvised phrasing. Rhythms ranging from simple to complex combine to create multi-layered grooves. This means students of different levels of experience can play and have fun together. All ages and ability levels welcome.

*Students must bring their own drum for this workshop, preferably conga or bongo, but other types of hand-drums (ex: djembe, cajón,) are also acceptable. Please enquire if you’re unsure whether your drum is suitable for applying conga/bongo rhythms.

Teacher: Originally from Mexico, Oscar Robles Diaz is a multi-instrumentalist recording artist, composer, music teacher and performing musician based in the Comox Valley.
