Local historian, Parker Williams, will be the next speaker at the general meeting of the Nanaimo Historical Society. Williams has dug into the biographies and careers of two 19th century schooner captains who sailed between the harbours of the Pacific Northwest.
Norwegian-born Captain Jack Dolholt (1819-1905) mad his home at the end of Jack Point for more than 40 years.
Hapless mariner, Captain James (Jemmy) Jones (1830-82) wrecked several schooners along southern Vancouver Island. Jemmy Jones Island, off of Oak Bay, was renamed after Jones lost the schooner, the Caroline, on the shore here.
Parker Williams, a founding member of the Nanaimo Museum, also made local history back in 1947 when as a teenager he was one of the instigators of the Five Cent Chocolate Bar Strike (opposing the price increase to 8 cents) that started in Ladysmith and spread across Canada.
