Hapless mariner, Captain James (Jemmy) Jones (1830-82) wrecked several schooners along southern Vancouver Island.  Jemmy Jones Island, off of Oak Bay, was renamed after Jones lost the schooner, the Caroline, on the shore here.=0D=0A=

Parker Williams, a founding member of the Nanaimo Museum, also made local history back in 1947 when as a teenager he was one of the instigators of the Five Cent Chocolate Bar Strike (opposing the price increase to 8 cents) that started in Ladysmith and spread across Canada.=0D=0A=

The Nanaimo Historical Society is a non-profit organization.  Founded in 1953, the Society's mission is to preserve, promote, and celebrate the history of Nanaimo and central Vancouver Island.  Annual membership is $24 fro an individual, $30 for a family, and $34 for an organization.=0D=0A=

Membership includes a subscription to British Columbia History, the quarterly journal of the British Columbia Historical Foundation.=0D=0A=
