Raven Baroque Orchestra and Sister Speak in the Nootka Court courtyard. Indigenous artists live painting in the upper court. Fresh maccha milling in the teabar powering ice maccha drinks. These are just some of the entertainment, art and culture being presented at JagaSilk Music, Eagle Feather Gallery and Reso Nation’s 2019 “Music Tea and Art in the Court” to be held Saturday, Aug 3 from 12pm to 5pm (inside Nootka Court at 633 Courtney St, Victoria BC)
Admission will be $15 and includes performances from four acts including Los Angeles CA’s Sister Speak (solo), a folk/indie/world project fronted by Sherri Anne, originally from Victoria. Sister Speak is currently is on a world tour in support of sophomore record The Stand EP and aims to share a positive message through her music project. Also performing will be the Little Weee, a bluegrass folk duo, one half from Victoria favourite Children of Celebrities, as well as Victoria's Truth and Dolphin, who will be performing their unique brand of folk poetry funk. The Raven Baroque Orchestra will headline, performing in period costumes and showcasing a spectrum of Baroque composers Bach, Corelli, Handel, Marin Marais, Valentini and Vivaldi.
In the upper courtyard, Eagle Feather Art Gallery will be hosting an inspired group of Indigenous Artists as they create artwork to the music and the tea. Lon French is a Haida graphic artist whose artwork has recently been chosen by the Artists Against Racism organization's Eagles Rising campaign, Nelson McCarty is an Interior Salish wood carver who recently had his carving of twenty-two talking sticks selected as gifts for the BC First Nations conference, while Suzanne Page is a Plains Cree artist and ceramics instructor with her art that uses traditional motifs and historical photos showcased in art galleries across Western Canada. Also creating art live to music and tea will be Doug LaFortune, a master Coast Salish artist and wood sculptor, whose totem poles are displayed both nationally and internationally. Andrea Fritz will be contributing work as a Coast Salish artist and art teacher, her medium being acrylic paintings, serigraphs and digital prints. We are excited to have Gus Frenchy as well, a Coast Salish graphic artist who learned from master Coast Salish artists Joe Wilson and Luke Marston and was selected for a group art exhibit at the Robert Bateman Centre.
The event is to celebrate original music, indigenous art and fresh milled tea, with all donations to the Nana Foundation Animal Charity. The foundation helped JagaSilk owners Jared and Miyuki save their cat Jaga (the namesake of the company) back in 2005, and they hope to “give back to this beautiful organization to support the many lives they save”.
