May is the month of spring’s vitality when the Island Consort Chamber Choir celebrates the season with a program titled, “To Music: To Life!” This choir of classical and contemporary repertoire opens with William Byrd’s Late Renaissance celebratory “Laudibus in Sanctis” – moving in the 1st half through works by Monteverdi, Duruflé, Barber, Brahms, Beethoven and Bach. Pianist, Liam Pistor, will accompany the choir for Brahms’ “Four Quartettes”, Op 92 and a string quartet from the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra will accompany the choir on Barber’s “Agnus Dei” (Adagio), Beethoven’s “Elegischer Gesang” and Bach’s “Jesus Bleibet Meine Freude”.

The 2nd half begins with the spiritual, “My Lord, What A Morning”, followed by Rachmaninoff’s beautiful “Bogoroditse Devo”, two melodies from Sibelius and Dvorak symphonies, “Somewhere”, from Bernstein’s West Side Story, ending with two folk songs; “The Road Home” and “Proschai”, a song by the former Limelighters (1960’s) arranged for the Island Consort by Music Director, Bruce Farquharson. Liam Pistor, a former singer with the Island Consort – currently in Graduate Studies in Music at UBC, returns to accompany the choir on 3 songs.

The choir performs Saturday, May 6th, 2:00 pm at Gabriola United Church and May 7th, 7:30 pm at St. Andrew’s United Church in Nanaimo.
