Presentation on the return of Humpback Whales and the need for increased awareness from coastal British Columbians. Information will include Marine Education and Research Society research on Humpback feeding and rate of entanglement. There will be discussion of their efforts to increase awareness about how to avoid collision and what to do if entanglement is witnessed (for the sake of boater and whale safety)
VIU Sustainability is pleased to host Jackie Hildering--co-founder of the Marine Education and Research Society. As an educator, whale researcher, avid diver and underwater photographer, Jackie is also known as “The Marine Detective”. On-camera experience includes being featured on Animal Planet’s “Wild Obsession” series and in the BBC productions “New threat to Canada's Pacific humpback whales?” and “Ingenious Animals”. She is the 2010 winner of the Vancouver Aquarium’s Murray A. Newman Award for Excellence in Aquatic Conservation.
