Jackie Hildering: “BIG GULP: The varied feeding strategies of BC’s Humpback Whales”: (By donation.)
Jackie is a researcher with the Marine Education and Research Society
Expert on whales, particularly Humpbacks and Killer whales,
Focusses on protection and conservation needs of marine mammals,
She’s an avid diver and known as “The Marine Detective”

10 – 10:45: Grant Scott: Conservancy Hornby Island’s Marine Conservation Initiative
10:45 – 12: Dr. John Ford:
“WOLVES OF THE SEA: Ecology and Life History of Killer Whales in BC”
BC Marine Mammal expert, research scientist (emeritus) with the Pacific Biological Station, and author of Marine Mammals of British Columbia
Ford will discuss how orcas rely on a healthy and productive food web in which herring plays a key role, describe the foraging specializations and other cultural traditions of west coast killer whales, and give us an update on their conservation status.
12-1: LUNCH catered by Hornby Island Co-op
1-2:15: Dr. Andrew Trites:
“SEA LIONS GALORE: Why are there so many around Hornby?”
Trites specializes in North Pacific marine mammals and is a BC sea lion expert
Professor and Director of the Marine Mammal Research Unit in the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at UBC in fields of nutrition, ecology, physiology, behaviour, anthropology and oceanography.
His research furthers the conservation and understanding of marine mammals, and helps resolve conflicts between people and marine mammals.
2:15 – 4:30: “BE PART OF THE SOLUTION – Panel Discussion – What Can We Do?”
CHI’s Mike Berman chairs panel of all speakers including local experts to:
Answer questions from the school participants
Discuss what marine values need to be protected
What are the planning tools for protections?
What has been done elsewhere?
What are our next steps?
7:00 p.m. HERRING BALL dance featuring The Songbirds
Cash bar. $10 at the door. (Door opens 7 p.m.)
