Heart Smart Women: All About Women and Heart Disease

Until her own heart attack in 2008 (and subsequent health advocacy training at the world-famous Mayo Clinic - the first Canadian ever invited to attend the WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium for Women With Heart Disease!), CAROLYN THOMAS had no clue that more women than men die of heart disease each year (although that stat's been true since 1984!) Or that heart disease kills six times more women annually than breast cancer does. Yet there's also good news: we now know that up to 80% of all cardiovascular disease is preventable!
In this interactive and (surprisingly!) fun annual Heart Month event in Victoria, BC Canada, Carolyn and her very special guest DR. MARTHA GULATI will share both the heart patient's perspective and a cardiologist's expertise on these important topics:
- women's unique cardiac risk factors and how to address them
- signs and symptoms that you might be having a heart attack (including a number of vague, atypical symptoms common in women that just might shock you)
- lessons about heart attack survival to inspire you
- and the crucial differences betwen men's and women's heart disease - from diagnosis to treatment!
For the first time ever, cardiologist Dr. Martha Gulati, an internationally recognized expert on women’s heart health, will join Carolyn in Victoria for her "Heart Smart Women" presentation this year. Dr. Martha - truly one of the rock stars of women's cardiology! - is Professor of Medicine and Chief of Cardiology at the University of Arizona, the best-selling author of Saving Women’s Hearts, the Editor-in-Chief of the American College of Cardiology's journal CardioSmart, a board member of WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, the American Society of Preventive Cardiology, and the Phoenix American Heart Association.
Open to all, Carolyn's "Heart Smart Women" presentations have been described as "part cardiology bootcamp, and part stand-up comedy!" Her award-winning blog HEART SISTERS has had over 9.8 million views from 190 countries worldwide, and her writing about women's heart health and specifically the heart patient experience has been republished internationally, including in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). In 2014, she was also invited by that journal to become a Patient Reviewer as part of their innovative Peer Review system for cardiac research papers submitted for publication in the BMJ. Her new book "Heart Sisters: A Survivor's Take On Women and Heart Disease" is based on her HEART SISTERS blog articles, to be published by Johns Hopkins University Press early next year.
Admission to this important presentation featuring our very special guest speaker Dr. Martha Gulati is FREE, but pre-registration is required to book a space.
