Food Literacy World Caf� and Long Table Lunch

With the new year upon us we are bringing everyone back together around the table to eat and talk about building a healthy and sustainable food system in the Capital Region.

In 2013, the Victoria Foundation and community partners collaborated to create a Community Food Security Road Map (http://www.communitycouncil.ca/initiatives/crfair/food-systems.html). One of the key areas that arose from the work together was the need to focus on building Food Literacy and Knowledge. We said that Food Literacy is a fundamental foundation to achieving more food secure and healthy communities and we needed to build better understanding and coordination of our efforts around it.

This involves looking at the work we all do to ensure that families or individuals in the community have the opportunity and ability to know where their food is coming from, what is important to them about their foods, and how to access, prepare and partake in good healthy diets.

CRFAIR as the regional coordination body would like to invite you to a World Caf� and lunch to dig deeper into understanding what we know about building food literacy in the region, who is taking on what roles and how could we improve with more �networked� and amplified, approach.

We will be looking to The Food Literacy Project, with academics at the University of Victoria and the Community University Research Alliance to work with us to better understand what we mean by Food Literacy, what we see as community approaches, and how we define and measure our success in moving forward. They will also help us look at the ways we can organize and work together towards needed policy changes.
