Sunday, March 1st, 2020
1:30 PM to 3:30 PM

From 1:30-3:30pm in the large gathering room at the downtown location of the Vancouver Island Regional Library everyone is welcome to participate in discussions on the subject of death. We will gather in small groups of 3-5 people and will encourage one another to speak about the asspects of death which may be difficult, ancient, unfamilliar or surprising, etc.

When we deny the reality of our own mortality we do more harm than good to our selves and society. One of the tenants of the Death Positive Movement is " that the culture of silence around death should be broken through discussion, gatherings, art, innovation, and scholarship."

Death Cafes are being held around the world to give voice to the conversations which need to come forth if we are to become enriched by our imminent death even if it is still far in the future. Many people in our culture fear death and many want to explore the many issues which arise when we contemplate aspects of our own mortality.

If you enjoy talking with others in a nonjudgemental environment about living and dying, please join us for a Death Cafe. There will be two session of 45-55 minutes each dividing our numbers into small groups so that everyone is encouraged to participate in the discussion.

From Deathcafe.com :

At a Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death.

Our objective is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'.

A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session.

Our Death Cafes are always offered:

- On a not for profit basis

- In an accessible, respectful and confidential space

- With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action

- Alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food – and cake!
