CSRS Summer Lectures - Second Lecture - Fertility Ritual in Modern Japan
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
Despite the fact that Japan is a modern country completely at home in advanced technology, it still has a place for customs and rituals that we associate with a pre-modern age. Among the most dramatic are annual fertility rituals in which large phallic images are paraded through the streets. This presentation presents images from two such fertility shrine festivals and asks what purpose these rituals serve today.
Victor Sōgen Hori is a professor of Japanese religion in the Faculty of Religious Studies of McGill University. He is writing a book on language in Zen Buddhism and also editing a book of papers on Buddhism in Canada.
