Among the most dramatic are annual fertility rituals in which large phallic images are paraded through the streets. This presentation presents images from two such fertility shrine festivals and asks what purpose these rituals serve today.=0D=0A=

Victor Sōgen Hori is a professor of Japanese religion in the Faculty of Religious Studies of McGill University. He is writing a book on language in Zen Buddhism and also editing a book of papers on Buddhism in Canada.=0D=0A=
