Classes will be held at Lake Trail Middle School

Instructor Oscar Robles Diaz is a multi-instrumentalist, music teacher and band leader who located to the Comox Valley from Mexico just over five years ago. He has studied music at Mexicos national university, UNAM, as well as other institutions, though he says his knowledge in Latin and African percussion styles is thanks to workshops he has taken with such greats as Lamine Thiam, Mamadi, as well as Mexicos master percussionist, Candido Hernandez, with whom Oscar has studied and collaborated with extensively.

This introductory class will focus on several different conga and bongo rhythms that make up the basic foundations of popular styles from Cuba and other Latin American countries. Proper hand and body positioning will be taught as well as how to relax, feel and internalize syncopation in the body and move toward expressing it freely.
