Join us for an informative presentation with leaders in the field of concussion diagnosis and management: Dr. David Brooks and Dr. Michael Gaetz. We are also excited to have Vancouver Island Raiders Football Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator, Jerome Erdman, joining us for the panel discussion. Dr. David Brooks is the Manager, Clinical Services (Senior Medical Advisor) supporting Special Care Services, Occupational Disease and Disability Awards at WorkSafe BC. Dr. Brooks’ recent work at WorkSafe includes updating of mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) information for case managers and medical advisors and ongoing consultation on both MTBI and traumatic brain injury (TBI) related to work injuries. His primary background is sports medicine with emphasis on concussion/MTBI. Dr. Brooks looked after many sports teams and instituted concussion baseline testing for many teams and leagues including the WHL Kelowna Rockets, Penticton Vees and BC Freestyle Ski team. Dr. Michael Gaetz is an Associate Professor in the Kinesiology and Physical Education Department at the University of the Fraser Valley in Chilliwack BC. He has been researching the effects of mild traumatic brain injury since 1998 and was one of the first to report cumulative effects of concussion in athletes.

Dr. Gaetz has over 30 years of experience as a Hockey Canada certified coach. His experience as player, parent, and coach informs his scientific work, which currently focuses on improving the responsible development of young athletes and developing theoretical constructs to explain the complex outcomes of athletes that experienced multiple concussions.

As a player, Jerome Erdman, was a National Champion with the Renfrew Trojans in 1982 and won a Grey Cup with the Blue Bombers in 1984. Jerome’s playing career in the CFL saw him spend time with Winnipeg, Edmonton and Ottawa. His coaching career followed his playing days, when he started building his coaching resume working on the staff at his alma mater, SFU. He then headed to the UK, joining the BAFL’s Glasgow Lions, and later joined NFL Europe’s Scottish Claymores. Jerome returned to Canada in 2000, coaching at UBC, McGill, and CFL’s Lions, Tiger-Cats and Argonauts.
