The Nanaimo Museum is hosting a feature exhibit in December called 1950s Christmas.  The exhibit highlights popular culture in the 1950s, including Christmas and toys.  1950s Christmas opens on Monday, December 1 and runs until Monday, January 5.

1950s Christmas takes a nostalgic look at daily life and Christmas traditions.  “1950s Christmas is an ideal exhibit for generations of families to visit together,” says Aimee Greenaway, Interpretation Curator at the museum.  “Many grandparents grew up in the 1950s so will recognize artifacts and photos from their youths.  Fashions and trends from that era are popular right now with children of baby boomers.  And, of course, the toys are interesting for all ages.”  Most of the toys in the exhibit are on loan from people in the community.  "We always appreciate the strong community response for loaning us artifacts for the exhibit," says Greenaway.

The exhibit coincides with the museum’s busy Christmas season.  “1950s Christmas will be a great addition to our popular family Christmas event,” says Greenaway.  The Under the Christmas Tree event takes place on Saturday, December 13 from 12pm-3pm and features professional storyteller, Margaret Murphy sharing Christmas stories at 12:30pm and children's activities afterwards until 3pm

Admission to the museum in the month of December is by cash donation to the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive.  "The holiday season provides a great opportunity for us to support local organizations that help Nanaimo families," says Debbie Trueman, General Manager.  "Community members can visit the museum for a family Christmas experience and know they are helping people in our area."

The museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm, except for holiday closures on the website at www.nanaimomuseum.com  The Nanaimo Museum is located in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, beside Serious Coffee.
