Zonta says NO to Child Marriage

According to the United Nations, 37,000 girls under the age of 18 are married each day worldwide. We may think that this is a problem that happens far, far away and so we should focus our campaigning efforts on changing the law on other continents. But let us look to our own doorstep first ...

Here, within Canada, between 2000 and 2018 there were 3,382 marriage licenses involving minors issued Canada-wide. And 429 of those were within BC. So Zonta Victoria have decided to begin a campaign to get the law changed here, to a minimum of 18 years old, no exceptions. Marriage comes under provincial legislation, so the campaign will be to change the BC Marriage act.

Zonta Victoria will have a very special guest speaker on Nov 28th - Lina, an international student at Pearson College from Norway who began her campaign at the tender age of 14 years to have the law on child marriage in her home country changed, and she succeeded! At the meeting, Lina will share her personal story with us and this will act as a springboard to develop the strategy to change the law here in BC.

There will be a full supper served at the meeting.
