This folk-roots duo first took the stage together New Year’s Eve of 2009, married in 2010 and formed Zonnis in 2013, a celebration of the birth of their son Zander.
With a full commitment to love in every mold imaginable, they regularly tour Western Canada, sometimes dipping into the coastal United States and taking touring, writing and family trips throughout Central America. Anywhere an audience is open-minded and engaged is Zonnis’ favourite place to perform. Some festivals they have enjoyed rocking include Artswells, Arts on the Fly, MoM, Soul Fest and Hootstock.
With enough originals to fill an evening and enough beloved cover tunes to fill a lifetime, a Zonnis show is about engaging and entertaining an audience through a musical adventure. Rise of the Sheep is Zonnis’ first full-length album, following four demos and many hundred live shows. It features eleven studio tracks, melody-driven songs steeped in harmony and heart with an overarching rhythmic acoustic vibe. The album is an invitation to freedom, two black sheep leading the rest to a musical journey, echoing Zonnis’ eternal message: follow the heart and peace and love will flourish. This attentively produced album is balanced like a complex red wine—crossing genres and satisfying myriads of indulgent listeners.
Andrea’s technical musical training is evident in the vocal arrangements and her operatic vocal heights. Adam’s drive, skill and playful nature show a songwriter who continuously makes room. At times his vocals are gruff and at others they sail, like on a wave. It is a dare to taste the album’s flavours, featuring tales from Zonnis’ travels told in folk-roots, old time rock and roll, west-coast surf and theatrical storytelling. Listeners will dance, question, accept and be guided into love, at a live show or at home. Tracks like “Coco Loco” describe the accepted way of life of ex-pats on a coastal Costa Rican town, where Loco is cool; “Too Little too Late,” is a soulful rock duet about a couple having an argument; “Up Dawson Creek without a Paddle” delves into Canadian adventure humour and “The Ghost Song” explores a spooky, historical tale from Zonnis’ hometown of Victoria, BC. Zonnis is a reminder that feel good music is alive and well.
