"Dear Kitty": Anne addresses her private diary as if it were her friend. "I am thirteen years old. It seems to me that no one would be interested in what I write. And yet I have to write to bring out what's buried inside my soul. My diary will be filled with my thoughts, my dreams, my plans."

Anne Frank received her diary as a present for her 13th birthday on June 12, 1942. Less than a month later, all the Franks and the Van Daans, two Jewish families, go into hiding from the Nazis at number 263 Prinsengracht Street, in a small living space above a warehouse/workshop, recorded in history as the Secret Annex. Joined four months later by an eighth person, Albert Dussel, they remain undiscovered until August 4, 1944 when Dutch Nazis turn them over to the German police. Although the Allies' invasion of Europe has already occurred, full liberation is too late to save them: only Anne's father, Otto, survives the war. Anne's fascinating and inspiring diary is found and passed to Otto, and thereby preserved for our reading today.

It is a timeless story rediscovered by each new generation. For young readers and adults it continues to capture the remarkable spirit of Anne Frank. In spite of a trying confinement of two years, Anne remained triumphant, defiant and heartbreakingly human. She records for all youth to remember: "Make the most of your carefree young life as you can".

Anne, in spite of what you thought -- that no-one would be interested in your diary -- we are!
