Superficially, the audiences, venues, and presentation of contemporary classical music and experimental rock seem worlds apart. The actual music however is sometimes shockingly similar.
The Victoria Composers Collective and noise-rock band SCHOOLGIRL have teamed up to break down the cultural barriers and put the music front and centre. Karlheinz Stockhausen was one of the most innovative and controversial composers of the 20th century. An early proponent of electric instruments, his influence stretches beyond the realm of classical music to rock, jazz, electronic, and hip hop artists.
Members of epoch-defining German bands Can and Kraftwerk even claim to have studied with him. Central to Stockhausen's work was the search for new sounds and new ways of listening. WoodStockhausen aims to exemplify this adventurous and transgressive spirit. Members of the Victoria Composers Collective have composed eight new pieces for varying combinations of drums, bass, electric guitar, synthesizer, voice, violin, and record-player.
SCHOOLGIRL will close the night with their signature brand of high-energy sonic mayhem. Formed in 2014, the Victoria Composers Collective is a community of emerging composers and musicians dedicated to the performance and promotion of new music. The Collective has staged numerous concerts in the Greater Victoria area, as well as a tour across BC.
Some event highlights include glassclothwoodmetal & other materials: a concert of new vocal works at Open Space, and an annual new music festival in collaboration with Oak Bay Music. The Victoria Composers Collective cultivates a philosophy of radical openness with regards to the diverse creative directions of its members.
The composers and performers that comprise this community are united in their desire to bring new and boundary-pushing music to the public.
