10:00 AM to 11:30 AM

In the spirit of equality, diversity, and inclusivity, Canadians across the country will rally with sisters, brothers and non-binary family in the United States on Saturday, January 21, 2017, in support of the Women’s March on Washington. Thousands of women are travelling to Washington, DC to be part of this historic march. Simultaneously, 65 sister marches are being held in over 32 countries worldwide – and counting.

The Canadian Women’s March on Washington is a rallying cry from coast to coast, in over ten cities nationally. People will peacefully march and rally in solidarity with millions around the world, one day after the Presidential inauguration.

Canadians will gather to say loud and clear that discrimination will not be tolerated, and stand in support of all those who have been the targets of hatred within Canada and abroad: indigenous peoples, people of colour, Muslims, immigrants, LGBTQ2+, Two-Spirit people, people with disabilities, women and others. This grassroots coalition – including many first time organizers – will be one of the largest international demonstrations ever assembled. “This is a good moment to express our pride in a Canadian culture that encourages and respects differences,” said Nanaimo lead organizer Sonnet L’Abbé. “Nanaimo joins hundreds of cities in the U.S., Canada and around the world in remembering the long history of hard work for women’s rights and in anticipating women’s continued leadership in years ahead.”

The outpouring of support from across Canada reflects our country’s wide diversity. The march brings together business owners, religious communities, labour groups, academics, politicians, artists, students, girls, boys, women, men, and non-binary individuals -- just to name a few — everyone who believes that women’s rights are human rights will be marching on January 21st 2017.

In Nanaimo, the march takes place on traditional Snuneymuxw territory. It will start at 10 a.m. at Diana Krall Plaza and move at 10:30 to Maffeo Sutton Park, where speakers (TBA) will address those assembled.
