Engage your senses and brighten your winter with the hottest theatre from the coldest country at Intrepid Theatres Winterlab, January 25 Feburary 1, 2014.
Several of the most innovative theatre artists from across the Great White North take over spaces both traditional and unconventional with work that will stretch the imaginations, engage the senses and spark conversations. Multi-disciplinary live performances from Halifax, Whitehorse and brand new work from artists right here at home are all part of the week long festival that returns for a second year. Winterlab will start with a launch party featuring a projection show from Halifax, and end with the same company throwing a goodbye party to the city. In between these parties, will be a week of residencies, a puppet and live action adventure for the whole family, and more, so stay tuned
(We) Are Here
Halifaxs Secret Theatre brings two highly original new works to Winterlab. The first, (We) Are Here follows a homesick girl on a journey far away from home, separated from her lover she drifts both literally and metaphorically. Using projections, music and animation, two performers manipulate the equipment and create the imagery that tells the story. Watch a video of the show.
Farewell Victoria
FAREWELL VICTORIA, the second, is a city specific original creation. The performers transform a busy city corner into an imagined temporary community, with a live video backdrop; they explore the senses with photographs of nearby places, audio recordings of familiar neighborhoods and change the lyrics of songs to suit the iconic institutions of this city. This piece offers a unique perspective on an old city; an opportunity to imagine what this place would be like if all the people who left had stayed. Its a goodbye party, complete with local food, music and one last slow dance. The Farewell project has appeared in Halifax, Quebec, Wales and Denmark. Watch a video of the show.
Sci-Fi Double Feature
Sci-Fi Double Feature from Whitehorses Ramshackle Theatre is at once a cardboard science fiction puppet show and a full-blown 1960s action-adventure B-movie. This magical collision of puppetry and film is fun for the entire family. You will see a small-scale puppet show that is captured live and projected onto the big screen behind the action and original stop-motion animation. It is a true all-ages show (sci-fi costumes encouraged) that perfectly captures the wit, anarchy, characters and adventures that sell-out midnight performances and kids matinees alike. Watch the trailer.
Petri Dish Residency
Intrepid Theatre re-launches Petri Dish at Winterlab, with artist residencies for two companies. This is a next step for those local emerging artists who have produced work in The YOU Show series. The Petri Dish Residency offers artists the opportunity to explore a new idea, play, to experiment, to explore, to collaborate with Winterlab artists and to maybe discover something amazing. There is no performance at the end just the time and space to develop a new work.
