Wet Felting Workshop: Bowl or Vessel
In this 3 hour class, you will make a 6 - 7 inch bowl or a vessel using merino wool as a base. Note: This is not a needle-felting project; the wool is made into fabric with water & soap and lots of agitation. Most materials and supplies will be provided. This will include 2 ounces of merino wool plus a selection of silk, other wool types, light fabrics, and yarns for embellishing your vessel. You will need to bring a large bath towel and a pair of fabric scissors.
There are 4 basic steps to wet felting a bowl or vessel:
1. Planning & layout of your original design on both sides of a resist; wetting it with warm, soapy water;
2. Felting the wool by rubbing and rolling until it is firm enough to cut and remove the resist;
3. fulling (shrinking) the vessel by more rubbing, rolling and tossing; this makes your 3D form into a solid fabric that cannot be undone;
4. Shaping the vessel and leaving it to dry.
