Western Edge Theatre: Plays and Pie

Nanaimo’s Western Edge Theatre serves up theatrical dessert this Fall as it presents "Plays and Pies," a series of staged readings of very contemporary plays.
"Western Edge continues to seek the sort of provincial funding that will allow us to return to producing a full-fledged season," says artistic producer Eliza Gardiner. "Meanwhile, we want to do what we do best: treat our audiences, and our family of artists, to these plays from around the world, that represent the best in contemporary theatre."
______________
Western Edge Theatre’s Fall “Plays and Pie” series of staged readings wraps up on November 15th with The Girl’s Guide to Saving the World, a biting comedy by the sensational young British playwright Elinor Cook.
A frank and funny new play about friendship, feminism, and what it means to be successful, The Girl’s Guide centers on Jane and Bella, two best friends who, as they enter their 30s, aren’t entirely sure what they want anymore. They start a blog to tackle the evils of sexism, hoping to give it “a scathing editorial tone that’s also warm and engaging,” but are taken aback at its immense success, especially when it attracts a small army of male trolls.
When Jane’s boyfriend decides he wants to quit his teaching job to stay home and raise their cat, and Bella accepts a job at the sort of women’s magazine they both once derided, Jane is left with not too few choices, but too many.
Elinor Cook won the 2013 George Devine Award for most promising British playwright. The Western Edge staged reading features Kismet Theatre director Bonnie Catterson, Carly Neigum (most recently seen at the Fringe Festival in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea), and William Anderson (last seen at Western Edge Theatre in Proud).
The play comes with an audience advisory for adult language and content.
A fundraiser for Western Edge, the staged reading of The Girl’s Guide to Saving the World is presented Saturday, Nov. 15th at 7:30 pm at Kismet Theatre Academy (55 Victoria Rd., Nanaimo). Admission is by donation at the door.
The play runs about 90 minutes, which will leave plenty of time for pie after.
