"Choral music is....something that goes to the heart of our humanity, our sense of community." These words of John Rutter, a renowned choral composer, express the core of the award-winning Encore! Women's Choir's performances.
Share the joy of choral music at Encore!'s seventh annual spring concert, "We Are One" Encore! performs a mix from folk to classical--from "The Battle of Jericho" (one of two pieces for which the choir won an award for the most outstanding choral performance at this year's Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival) to Wagner's "Spinning Chorus." For example, the program presents selections of poetry in masterful settings, such as "Wings," with text by Victor Hugo, and "Love's Philosophy," a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Lively pieces including "Bashana Haba'ah," a piece that imagines a world without war, complement the full Missa Brevis by Nancy Telfer and Oscar Peterson's "Hymn to Freedom."
The choir is excited to debut "Light" by local composer, and Encore! choir member, Deborah Sumner and the stirring "Music in My Mother's House" is not to be missed. The choir's scholarship student, Hanna Seinen, will also sing a solo concert group of three songs, most of which she will be taking to the Provincial Music Festival in Powell River in late May.
