The Cumberland Museum is very pleased to welcome the Vancouver Cantonese Opera to Cumberland for a special performance during our Lunar New Year celebration!
During their stay in Cumberland, the Opera is offering a free, hands-on workshop introducing basic techniques on the Classical Water Sleeve Dance. This participatory workshop for teens and adults offers an opportunity to try out this elegantly beautiful dance, with direction from Rosa Cheng, and other performers from the Vancouver Cantonese Opera.
Water sleeves (Shuixiu) refers to the performance of various movements using double whitesilk sleeves attached to the cuffs of a costume. It is one of the most skillful stunts in Chinese opera. Its function is to exaggerate the actors mood. There are hundreds of gesticulations in shuixiu, such as sleeves quivering, throwing, wigwagging, casting, raising, swinging, tossing, whisking, rolling folding, crossing and more, each representing an emotion or gesture.
The workshop takes place on Sunday, February 9th, from 2:00 3:00. Register through www.cumberlandmuseum.ca/events
The Water Sleeve workshop is brought to you by The Abbey Studio, the Cumberland Museum, and the Vancouver Cantonese Opera.
