Walking With Our Sisters K’ómoks is honoured to bring the memorial installation, Walking With Our Sisters, to Vancouver Island. Comprised of 1,810 pairs of handmade moccasin tops created by over 1,400 caring and concerned individuals, the beaded and embellished uppers form a large collaborative memorial in a solemn sacred space —with prayers, love, and honouring in every stitch.
This memorial honours the lives of more than 1,181 missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across Canada. The numbers are even greater in the United States. In generating awareness of this alarming reality in North America, the memorial affirms that every one of these lives matters — the women and girls who have been murdered or who are still missing are worthy of respect and dignity. The installation acknowledges the on-going grieving process for the family and friends of the missing women. As a community we come together to offer our love and support to them. We stand with the families in solidarity and support in the quest for justice. Symbolically the unfinished moccasins represent each of the unfinished lives of the women and girls whose lives were cut short. Displayed in a solemn sacred space, visitors will walk along a floor installation of embellished moccasin tops arranged along a winding fabric and cedar path.
Scheduled to continue touring across North America to over 22 locations during the five next years, the Walking With Our Sisters memorial’s closing ceremony will take place in Batoche, Saskatchewan in September of 2019.
The K’ómoks Band Hall, 3320 Comox Road, Courtenay is the first and only British Columbia venue for this nationwide event.
Open to the public, the event is free. This memorial is run solely by volunteers, and is inclusive, non-political and non-partisan.
