The Victoria Operatic Society was formed in 1945 and, for the last half-century, has had a home at the McPherson Playhouse which they mostly fill to capacity for their seven-show runs. For the Broadway experience you really need a big hall, says Mary-Lynne Britt, president of VOS. Doing shows in a church hall just wouldnt be the same. For this centennial gala, VOS is remounting its Broadway: Decades In Review from 2011, which has been rechristened VOS Celebrates The American Musical. Including medleys, they will showcase a hundred toe-tapping tunes from classics such as Oklahoma and contemporary shows like Wicked, Grease and Billy Elliot. Well have at least 20 singer-dancers, adds Britt. The performers are all moving, not just standing there singing! According to Britt, excited word-of-mouth about Broadway turned the second half of the run into a total sellout. Audiences loved it . . . just loved it, says Britt. Plus we got loads of emails and phone calls telling us how great it was.
