VIU Science and Technology Lecture Series: Ancestral Echoes - Meeting Shared and Unique Nutritional Needs
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
In this lecture Dr. Ron Hoggan will discuss how our unique mix of genes, reflecting the various environments in which our ancestors lived and adapted to, should help to drive our dietary choices. Dr. Hoggan will discuss how his research suggests contemporary "healthy" eating guides may be mired in misconceptions and are often informed and driven by political and economic concerns. He will discuss how when we consider human nutritional needs to be shaped by natural selection a startlingly different set of dietary recommendations emerge. Animal fats, a food we have consumed for more than one hundred thousand years, perhaps millions of years, must be seen as fairly benign whereas sugar and "healthy" whole grain cereals (relative newcomers) must be viewed with much greater skepticism. This revised nutritional view results in ailments ranging from coronary artery blockage to dementia being seen in a very different light.
