5:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Join junior, senior and graduating Media Studies students and faculty Monday April 23rd from 5-8:00 pm at the Vancouver Island University, Nanaimo campus, Malaspina Theatre lobby, building 310, for a year-end celebration, presentation of research findings, and unveiling of digital projects.

The “Media Expo” event displays work investigating media theory and analysis, short films, videos, and photographic galleries, Web design, games, podcasts and more. Stop by student stations to participate in interactive demonstrations, ask questions or review portfolios in this innovative and informational open-house event.

“We’re very proud of our graduates and want VIU students, friends and family, faculty, the Nanaimo and area community, and island industry professionals to see the best of what our integrated 4-year program has to offer. Our graduating students are poised for promising careers and this is their moment in the spotlight,” says Debra Pentecost, department Chair.

Presentations by upper-level students speak to their passion for digital storytelling and creative expression, researching or making media that combines text, audio, video, and analysis on diverse subjects. The department, just a decade old, has created video testimonials from its alumni.

“In our department we have many talented, hard-working students in their final years, striving to make their way into various media industries. I’m excited to see the works my peers have been creating both on their own and collaboratively throughout their time here at VIU," says undergraduate event organizer, Reef Hujaij.

The Media Studies degree is founded on the principle that theory and practice go hand in hand to train students who can apply a critical lens to all news and media content, understanding it in this context even as they join its ranks as communication experts across platforms. The students’ innovative projects attest to skills mandatory for the next generation of media thinkers, researchers, and creators.

“We are excited about this event. Part information, part inspiration, our “Media Expo” is the ideal opportunity to demonstrate how media make meaning,” says Ravi Mohabeer, faculty in the department.

Refreshments will be served and entertainment provided by a student DJ. Paid parking is available on campus. For more information contact Department Chair, Debra Pentecost `.
