Victoria Philharmonic Choir Family Christmas Carol Sing-along Concert

A community sing-along of traditional carols, with risers filled with toddlers to grandparents, backed up by sophisticated four-part harmony and a small dose of serious choral repertoire, all in one Christmas Concert? Which local choir could do that, again and again? Not many, which is probably why VPC’s annual concert, conducted by Peter Butterfield, has become one of those seasonal touchstones for families looking for an event that satisfies all generations of music lovers, in a seriously 'all are welcome' environment.
This year’s concert includes joyous music by JS Bach accompanied by a chamber orchestra and – jumping to our day, contemporary music by Bob Chilcott, a “contemporary hero of British choral music”, and by the familiar-to-many John Rutter.
The audience participation songs are classics of Christmas repertoire, with soaring harmonies and descants provided by the 80 voice choir and visiting Vancouver organist, Michael Molnar. And while VPC’s concert tends to be a Rudolph-free zone, the young choristers of the future have their own featured spots on the program. Seating is first-come, first-served, though the front few rows are reserved for families with small children.
