Victoria JazzFest presents a twin bill with Phil Dwyer Bridge Quartet and Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet at the First Metropolitan United Church on June 24.
Phill Dwyer
Parksville-raised Phil Dwyer is no stranger to JazzFest and no stranger to jazz fans all over the world, who for decades have savoured both the burnished tone of his tenor sax and the smart way he takes bop and post-bop in new and exciting directions. This past December, Dwyer became a member of the Order of Canada.
For this performance, Dwyer reunites with a unique group of seasoned players called the Bridge Quartet and makes some of the hottest jazz on the scene in what will be one of his last performances before attending Law School at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Joined by pianist Darrell Grant on the front line and anchored by the rock-solid rhythm section of bassist Tom Wakeling and drummer Alan Jones, the Bridge Quartet makes hard-swinging, high-energy jazz that is harmonically rich and rhythmically daring. They have recorded several acclaimed CDs and left behind a trail of enraptured audiences who just wanted to hear more of their adventurous contemporary jazz.

Jason Marsalis
Jason Marsalis is a member of that Marsalis clan from New Orleans and he has clearly inherited all the musical genes needed for a brilliant career. Initially a drummer, Marsalis was a sideman with a wide variety of bands and artists, ranging from a Brazilian percussion ensemble to revered pianist Marcus Roberts. The classically trained Marsalis picked up the mallets several years ago and made the shift to vibraphone, one of the jazz worlds most beguiling and challenging instruments. Hes been leading his own quartet since 2009.
Working mostly in a bluesy, post-bop idiom, Marsalis creates a hardswinging style of jazz that favours group interplay and urbane soloing. Both a gifted composer and a deeply skilled master of percussion on 2013s award-winning In a World of Mallets he also plays marimba, glockenspiel, tubular bells, and xylophone Marsalis has a great feel for polyrhythms and more than enough improvisational skills to make his uncles proud. Austin Johnson piano, Will Goble bass, Dave Potter drums.
