The Victoria Jazz Society kicks off its 2013/2014 Fall/Winter/Spring Concert Presentation Series on Wednesday, October 2 at Hermann�s Jazz Club with one of jazz�s most enduring and dazzlingly-skilled pianists, jazz legend Harold Mabern. He was an unsung hero of the 1960s hardbop scene, performing and recording with many of its finest artists. He has played and recorded with Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, just to name a few. Only in recent years has he begun to garner appreciation for his long-running legacy in jazz and the understated power of his talent; as critic Gary Giddins has written, �With the wind at his back, he can sound like an ocean roar.�

Mabern�s music is marked by unmistakable purpose and harmonic authority, and he employs a powerful technique and deep insight into a wide range of repertoire from the Great American Songbook to his own soulful originals.

Mabern�s trio (John Webber bass and Joe Farnsworth drums) will be joined by Juno Award Nominee, Vancouver saxophonist Cory Weeds.
